Growing Non-GMO Ivory Floradale/Hakuun Tulip Flower Bulbs
Plant your tulip bulbs anywhere with good draining soil that gets full sun in the spring. Some areas with full to partial shade in the summer (such as under a deciduous tree) can be good options. Plant the bulbs pointy end up in a trench or hole and backfill so they are 7 inches deep and 4-6 inches apart. Plant the bulbs in the fall once daytime temperatures consistently reach a maximum of 60 F. Tulips must endure a cold period in order to produce blooms. We recommend purchasing the pre-cooled bulbs if you are growing in a warmer climate, such as zones 8-10. See the next subheading for more information.
These ivory tulips bloom mid to late summer and effortlessly return yearly. During their growing season, water them about every other day. To give your tulips the best chance of returning next spring, ensure they have good drainage all year long (standing water can cause rot), fertilize in the early spring when the greens begin to appear, and once the flowers have died, cut back the flower stalk but allow the leaves to remain until they have yellowed and died completely. These steps give the bulb enough energy for a good dormancy period and put out gorgeous blooms again the following spring.
What Does Pre-Cooled Mean?
Our pre-cooled bulbs are put in a refrigerator at 41 F (5 C) for about two months beginning in early September. Pre-cooled bulbs are recommended for those growing in warm climates, such as zones 8-10, who may not have a sufficient cold period (12-16 weeks) to obtain a good bloom. Depending on your zone, you may need to refrigerate the bulbs for a few more weeks before planting for the best results.
Ivory Floradale/Hakuun Tulips in the Flower Garden
These attractive, white flowers are a fantastic addition to any garden’s springtime flush. These hybrid bulbs are particularly suited for perennial use and are fairly tolerant of grazing and other pests. Imagine these beautiful flowers bursting forth amid daffodils, followed by irises and hostas. The symphony of successional plant life can be a great strength to those who plan ahead.
Harvesting Ivory Floradale/Hakuun Tulips
Even more than a landscape flower, these tulips are outstanding cut flowers. Planting these for your spring arrangements is a fantastic way to usher in the growing season. The large, long, and sturdy stems can hold up to flower arranging with ease. The best time to harvest these blooms is just before the flower has opened all the way. Using sharp, clean shears, snip off the flower as close to the base of the plant as possible, being careful not to damage the leaves. Store the stems immediately in cool water. With flower food and changing out the water daily, the cut flowers can last 1-2 weeks. The bloom will continue to open and reveal its splendor even after being cut.

Stories From Our Gardeners
"Tulips are a big deal in West Michigan (where I grew up) due to the strong Dutch heritage in the area. Each spring, there is a Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan, which is a must-see for any tulip enthusiast! It features over 6 million blooming tulips over an 8-day period filled with lots of Dutch and tulip-related activities."
