Growing Non-GMO Darwin Hybrid Apeldoorn's Elite Tulip Flower Bulbs
These bulbs should be planted in an area that gets full sun in the late winter and early spring with well-draining soil. Areas that may be full to part shade in mid-summer but are full sun in the winter and spring (for example, under a deciduous tree) can be great options. Plant the bulbs with the pointed side up, about 7 inches deep and 4-6 inches apart. Plant in single holes or dig out an entire trench or bed, then backfill the soil for a large planting. Plant the bulbs in the fall once daytime temperatures do not exceed 60 F daily. These tulips need a cold period in order to bloom. To get them to bloom in warmer climates or seasons, order the pre-cooled bulbs.
Apeldoorn’s Elite tulips bloom in mid to late summer and return yearly if given 12-16 weeks of cool to cold temperatures. To maximize the blooms each year, keep the bulbs dry throughout the winter and summer when they are dormant. Typical rainfall is fine, but standing water and overwatering can cause the bulbs to rot. Fertilize in the early spring when the leaves begin to poke through the soil with a bulb fertilizer.
Once the flowers have died, immediately cut back the flower stalk. To promote next year’s blooms, leave the leaves until they die back, turn yellow, and can easily be removed from the plant. This allows the blub to save energy for next year’s bloom show.
What Does Pre-Cooled Mean?
Our pre-cooled bulbs are a great option for those wishing to have tulips in warmer climates where winter temperatures might not be cold enough to cause the necessary dormancy. The bulbs are placed in a refrigerator at 41 F (5 C) for about 2 months, beginning in early September. You may need to refrigerate them for a few more weeks before planting, depending on your zone. We recommend zones 8-10 plant pre-cooled bulbs for the best results.

Harvesting Darwin Hybrid Apeldoorn's Elite Tulips
While Apeldoorn’s Elite tulips are fantastic as a member of the landscape, they are also one of the best tulips for cut flower arranging. The sturdy stems and large, hardy blooms are perfect for spring arrangements. Before the bloom is opened all the way, cut the stem with clean, sharp scissors or a knife and immediately store it in cool water. The bloom will continue to open indoors and last 1-2 weeks. Prolong the blooms by replacing the water regularly and adding flower food.
