Growing Variegated Tomatoes in the Vegetable Garden
Variegated Tomatoes are a visually stunning variety with both unique leaves and colorful fruit. To grow them from seed, start indoors about 6-8 weeks before your region's average last frost date. For most areas in the United States, this means starting seeds in mid-February to early April. Plant the seeds about 0.25 inches deep in a quality seed-starting mix, ensuring the soil temperature is consistently between 70-90F. A heat mat can help maintain this temperature. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and provide ample light from a sunny windowsill or supplemental grow lights.
Once your seedlings develop their first true leaves and are about 6 inches tall, it’s time to prepare for transplanting outdoors. First, harden off the seedlings by placing them outdoors in a shaded area for a few hours each day, gradually increasing their exposure to sunlight and outdoor conditions over 7-10 days. When the danger of frost has passed, transplant the seedlings into the garden or containers in a full sun location. Space plants 24-36 inches apart to ensure good air circulation. Bury two-thirds of the plant's stem to encourage a strong root system. Use a cage or stake to support this indeterminate variety, as it will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season.
To keep your Variegated Salad Tomatoes thriving, water deeply and consistently, aiming for about 1-2 inches of water per week. Mulching around the plants can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 2-4 weeks or use a slow-release formula at planting time. Monitor the plants for pests like aphids or hornworms and use organic solutions, such as neem oil, if needed. Companion plants like basil, marigolds, and carrots can help deter pests and improve the health of your tomato plants. Regularly prune suckers (small shoots growing between the main stem and branches) to direct the plant's energy toward fruit production.
Harvesting Variegated Tomatoes
Variegated Tomatoes are ready to harvest about 90 days after transplanting, depending on growing conditions. The 3-4 oz fruits will turn orange-red when ripe. To harvest, gently twist the fruit off the vine or use pruning shears to avoid damaging the plant. Since this variety is indeterminate, you can expect a steady supply of tomatoes throughout the growing season rather than all at once. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production.
About Variegated Tomato Garden Seeds
Tomato Variegated is a unique 3-4 ounce red round fruited variety with splashes of white variegation on the green regular tomato leaves. These lovely indeterminate plants set a large crop of crack-free tomatoes.
This variety has ties back to Europe, where it became popular for its ornamental foliage. While its fruit is tasty, the plant’s unique leaves often steal the show in gardens and containers.
The variety was bred to highlight the unique multicolored foliage while also producing desirable fruits.
While it is not best to grow indeterminate varieties in containers, you can grow them in a 5-gallon bucket or larger container with a sturdy cage for support. Be sure to monitor hydration levels regularly as containers are prone to quickly drying out during the summer heat.
The Variegated Salad Tomato is a fantastic choice for gardeners who want a conversation-starting plant that delivers both visual interest and flavorful fruit.
