Growing Cleopatra Oregano in the Herb Garden
Start oregano seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before your last expected spring frost, or direct sow outdoors after frost once the soil has warmed. Because the seeds are very small and require light to germinate, press them gently onto the soil surface without covering them. Transplant seedlings outdoors once frost danger has passed, spacing plants 9-12 inches apart.
Grow Cleopatra oregano in full sun and well-drained soil. Avoid overly rich or soggy ground, which can reduce flavor and plant vigor. Pinching back young plants helps encourage branching and a fuller, tidier habit, and trimming after bloom helps keep plants compact and productive.
Harvesting/Landscape Use of Cleopatra Oregano
Harvest stems and leaves once plants are established and leafy, ideally just before bloom for the strongest flavor. Cleopatra is excellent for fresh use, and the leaves also dry well for later seasoning. Its trailing, compact habit and silver-gray foliage make it especially attractive in borders, containers, and mixed herb plantings.
About Cleopatra Oregano Garden Seeds
Cleopatra was recognized as a 2015 AAS Winner for its ornamental appeal and useful culinary quality.
This variety stands out from common Greek and Italian oreganos with a milder, slightly pepperminty flavor.
It is a high-yielding selection valued for both edible and ornamental use.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"For the best flavor and the prettiest plants, grow oregano a little lean. Too much fertilizer or overly rich soil can make it lush, but less fragrant. Cleopatra really shines in a warm container where its trailing habit can spill over the edge."
