Growing Non-GMO Snow Storm Calla Lily Flower Bulbs
Calla Lilies are easy to grow and quick to plant. Just keep in mind that they love moisture but also prefer well-draining soil. Their ideal soil pH is 5.5-6.5. Plant the bulbs 3-4 inches deep in beds or 2 inches deep in pots. The rounded side should be pointing down, and there should be 1-2 inches of soil above the tuber. Choose a spot for the container (or a place in the garden) that will meet the following requirements. Calla lilies flourish in part sun and may struggle if they get sunlight more than 70 percent of the day. They do best with typical indoor temperatures (around 68 F) but may grow slower if temperatures drop below 55 F or above 75 F. A sterilized medium is best to avoid water molds (pythium and phytophthora).
Proper soil nutrition is critical for continued blooming, good root development, and rich leaf color. Using a slow release fertilizer of nitrogen and potassium with little to no phosphorus at planting is ideal. About four weeks after applying this mix, start using semi-balanced liquid feed weekly. Once the leaves start to unfurl, reduce the fertilizer strength by 50-75 percent. After planting the bulbs, keep the soil lightly moist until you start to see a good-sized sprout emerging. Continue to water it regularly while avoiding sogginess until it reaches peak bloom. Then, decrease the watering schedule slightly.
Growing Snow Storm Calla Lily in Containers
If using containers, plant 1 per 4.5-inch container or two per 6.5-inch container. Smaller pots are trickier to grow as the plants tend to get root-restricted and stressed more easily. Throughout the entire process, avoid excessively wet or dry soil conditions. Expect foliage to emerge between 4-8 weeks after planting and bloom between 8-12 weeks after planting. The exact timing will vary depending on many factors. Removing the spent blooms at the base of the bloom stalk is recommended to improve the plant’s appearance, avoid fungal diseases from decaying plant matter, and prevent the plant from wasting energy on old blooms rather than creating new ones.
Snow Storm Calla Lily in the Flower Garden
Snow Storm Calla Lilies can be used indoors or outdoors in beds or containers. They are often used in the landscape as a mass planting and border plant. The deep, green foliage has white spots and creates a dramatic effect that enriches any landscape. In containers, indoors or out, they are often focal points when in full bloom and background foliage when dormant.
Harvesting Snow Storm Calla Lily
The Snow Storm Calla Lily is ideal for cut flower arrangements due to its elegant, long-lasting blooms. Harvest the flowers when the spathes are fully open but not yet faded. Use a sharp, clean knife or scissors to cut the stems at the base early in the morning. To ensure longevity and support in arrangements, immediately place the cut stems in water and use floral wire or supports if needed.
About Snow Storm Calla Lily Garden Bulbs
The Snow Storm Calla Lily is not safe for consumption. Both its flowers and foliage contain calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic if ingested by humans and pets.
The Royal Horticultural Society awarded the Snow Storm Zantedeschia the Award of Garden Merit, recognizing its outstanding and reliable contribution to gardens and landscapes.
Calla Lilies are not technically bulbs but tubers. They are considered semi-evergreen tuberous perennials. Also, the flower it is known for (large and white) is a spathe surrounding the real flower cluster, which is usually small and unimpressive.
When grown in containers, these delightful plants can be moved indoors and outdoors as the weather permits.
Cut down any dead flowers and yellowing foliage each fall for a tidy and healthy plant.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"It is always a good sign when a plant has received the RHS award of garden merit. Not only does it mean it is a tried and true plant, but you can also find great information about it on their website!"
