Growing Non-GMO Mount Everest Allium Flower Bulbs
To ensure successful growth, plant the bulbs in the fall, about 6-8 inches deep, roughly 2-3 times the bulb's diameter. This timing allows the bulbs to establish roots before the onset of winter and bloom in late spring to early summer. In colder zones, they may not survive the winter, so they are treated as annuals which will require replanting each year.
These alliums prefer well-drained, sandy to loamy soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Good drainage is crucial, as sitting in waterlogged soil can cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs about 12 inches apart to give them ample space to grow and ensure proper air circulation. This spacing helps prevent diseases and allows the plants to establish strong root systems.
Allium Mount Everest requires full sun to partial shade, thriving best in bright, direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. During the growing season, keep the soil moderately moist but avoid overwatering. Once established, alliums are quite drought-tolerant and need minimal watering. However, consistent moisture during their active growth period helps promote larger blooms.
This allium variety blooms in late spring to early summer, producing striking white spherical flower heads. Deadheading, or removing spent flowers, is not necessary for alliums, as they do not rebloom. To improve perennial blooming power, allow the foliage to die back naturally after blooming, which helps the bulbs store energy for the next growing season. Cutting back the foliage prematurely can weaken the bulbs.
To maintain healthy plants and robust blooms, fertilize the bulbs at planting time with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. During the growing season, a light application of compost or a balanced fertilizer can provide additional nutrients. Regularly check for common pests like onion flies and aphids, and treat infestations promptly with appropriate organic or chemical controls.

Stories From Our Gardeners
"One of the most common comments I hear from people when looking at ornamental allium flowers is comparing it to a plant likely to be seen in a Dr. Seuss book. It is so true! They are whimsical and so fun to look at."
