Growing Non-GMO Classic Gold Sunflower Flower Seeds
Classic Gold F1 Hybrid sunflower seeds grow nicely in most areas. Directly sow these seeds as soon as the soil temperature reaches a consistent 45 F. For earlier blooms, start the seeds inside 3-4 weeks before the soil is predicted to warm up. Transplant them outdoors after gradually transitioning them. Plant the seeds or seedlings in a prepared area that is weed-free. The seeds should sprout in approximately two weeks and then rise quickly enough that you can watch the growth.
These wonderful single-stem annuals will die when exposed to a hard frost but can self-seed to send a new generation the following year if the seeds are not collected or eaten; this is for areas with mild winters. No need to be concerned about volunteers becoming invasive; these showy sunflowers aren’t weedy at all. Classic Gold sunflowers have average water requirements and can handle mild variations. This variety may need to be staked in high-wind conditions or towards the conclusion of the season.
Classic Gold Sunflower in the Flower Garden
Classic Gold sunflowers are full of potential. Use these in your flower garden as a backdrop or a border. They thrive when cultivated in rows, blocks, or singles. Scatter them in any bare patch of soil, or intentionally plant them along a property line. They even appear at home among a wildflower mix.
Harvesting Classic Gold Sunflower
These tall beauties can be cut flowers for seasonal bouquets of bright yellow. When they are in full bloom, snip off the stem one to one and a half feet below the bloom. Tie a few stems together with a rubber band and suspend them upside down in an area with ventilation for dried flowers in 2-3 weeks!
Classic Gold sunflowers also develop edible seeds. To easily collect the seeds: Be speedy! The birds and other small critters go crazy for these seeds and will eat them if they aren’t collected promptly upon maturation. Use a mesh sack that can be cinched over the flower and secure it over the flower head once the petals have faded. Over the next 4-5 weeks, keep an eye on it and the seeds will mature and easily fall into the bag for easy collecting!

Tips From Our Gardeners
"I recommend harvesting the seeds at the end of the summer and then promptly removing the plants from the ground. After they’ve passed their prime they aren’t very nice to look at."
