Growing Basket Sweet Hybrid Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
To start growing your peppers, plant them in seed starting trays 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost date in your area. You can use well-draining soil or a seed starting mix like Minute Soil Coco Clair. Make sure you sow the seeds about 0.25 inches deep into the soil, and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. You can check whether you need to water your plants by sticking your finger into the soil - if it feels dry, then give your plants some water, but make sure not to overwater. If the soil looks wet, then wait for it to dry out a bit before you water your plants next. Keep the peppers in a warm area, between 80-90 F, so they can germinate. A grow light is a great way to keep their growing area warm. Once the seedlings emerge, normally after 7-10 days, you can move the plants to a cooler area to harden them off before transplanting them! Plant your seedlings in a sunny location that has well-draining soil, ideally somewhere you haven’t grown nightshades in a while, to make sure the soil has plenty of nutrients. Plant them 12-18 inches apart, and space your rows about 1-1.5 feet apart. Bury the roots completely in the soil. Be sure not to plant hot peppers and sweet peppers close together, as this can lead to cross-pollination!
There are several things you can do to make sure your Basket Sweet Peppers grow well. Make sure that you water your plants consistently, especially during dry periods. You can add mulch around the base of your plants to help keep the soil moist and suppress weeds. Try companion planting with plants like marigolds and herbs like basil, which can help attract beneficial insects to the garden, as well as deterring pests. Make sure to support the plants with stakes or trellises, which will help them grow upright and will support the plant as they grow fruit. You can also try adding a fertilizer that is rich in phosphorus and calcium to provide essential nutrients to your peppers. Keep a close eye on your peppers to make sure that they aren’t suffering from any pests or diseases, and address any issues immediately.
Harvesting Basket Sweet Hybrid Peppers
As your peppers fruit, keep a close eye on them so you are ready to harvest fruit as soon as it is ripe. The fruits will typically be ready within about 70 days of transplanting, and they will be a bright cherry red flavor and have a firm feel. Because this is a sweet variety, these peppers taste better when they are fully ripe, when they’re about 1 to 1.5 inches wide and have a glossy sheen. To harvest Basket Sweet peppers, use garden shears or a knife and cut the peppers from the plant. Make sure to be gentle and aim for a clean cut, and leave a small stem on the plant.

Tips From Our Gardeners
"Make sure you’re watering your plants consistently. If there are dry periods, it’s especially important to give them water - soil that is too dry can harm the growth of your plants and prevent them from producing fruit."
