Growing Full Moon F1 Hybrid Eggplant in the Vegetable Garden
Start Full Moon seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date, sowing 0.25 inch deep in a warm seed starting mix kept between 70 and 90 F for the fastest, most even germination. Wait to transplant outdoors until nighttime temperatures reliably stay between 55 and 60 F and the soil has warmed. Then space plants 18 to 24 inches apart in rows 3 to 4 feet apart in a full-sun location.
Eggplant is a heavy feeder, so work compost or a balanced fertilizer into the bed at planting and side-dress again once the first fruits begin to set. Keep soil consistently moist with about 1 to 2 inches of water per week, since moisture swings can cause blossom-end rot, and mulch well to retain moisture and keep roots warm. Sturdy stakes or cages help support the plant once it is loaded with fruit.
Harvesting Full Moon F1 Hybrid Eggplant
Fruits are ready around 60 to 75 days after transplanting, once the skin is glossy, taut, and springs back slightly when pressed. Waiting too long lets the skin turn dull, and the seeds harden and turn bitter, so it is better to pick a little early than late. Cut fruit from the plant with pruners or a sharp knife, leaving a short piece of stem attached, and handle them gently, as the skin bruises easily. Regular picking keeps the plant setting new flowers and fruit all season.
About Full Moon F1 Hybrid Eggplant Garden Seeds
Full Moon is a modern hybrid take on Black Beauty, the glossy purple-black eggplant that has defined the classic American garden eggplant since its introduction in the early 1900s.
Bred as an F1 hybrid, Full Moon keeps that familiar oval shape, deep color, and creamy flesh while adding the extra vigor, uniform fruit set, and disease tolerance that come with hybridization, along with a distinctive green calyx that makes it easy to identify in a mixed planting.
The mild, creamy flesh is a natural fit for grilling, roasting, baba ganoush, or breading up for a classic eggplant parmesan.
Tips From Our Gardeners
We like to pinch off the very first flowers that form before a young transplant has settled in. It feels counterintuitive, but it allows the plant to put its early energy into building a sturdier frame, which pays off with a larger overall harvest later in the season.
