Growing Blue Magic Hybrid Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow outdoors after frost when soil is warm, or start indoors 3 to 4 weeks early in biodegradable cells to avoid root disturbance. Plant 2 to 3 seeds per hill and thin to the strongest seedling. Provide 36 to 48 inches between plants and 60 to 72 inches between rows. Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.
Side-dress at vining and early fruit set. Train vines to keep paths open. Encourage pollinators for best yields, and support fruit on straw or boards to keep rinds clean and dry.
Harvesting of Blue Magic Hybrid Winter Squash
Harvest when rinds are hard, color is uniform blue-gray, and stems turn corky. Cut with 2 to 4 inches of stem. Cure 10 to 14 days in a warm, dry, airy place, then store at 50 to 60 F with ventilation for several months.
About Blue Magic Hybrid Winter Squash Garden Seeds
Blue Magic F1 is a miniature Blue Hubbard bred for today’s kitchens while keeping the classic eating quality of the type. Semi-vining plants carry uniform 4 to 6 pound fruit with thick, fine-grained flesh that shines in roasting, soups, and baking.
The compact size makes portioning and storage convenient without sacrificing sweetness or texture. A reliable keeper with attractive market appeal.
Stories/Tips From Our Gardeners
"Let fruit mature fully, then cure warm for two weeks. Flavor deepens noticeably after a month of storage, making late-season roasts especially rich."
