Growing Bee Balm Wild Bergamot in the Herb Garden
Sow seeds shallowly, about 0.125 inch deep, in spring after frost danger has passed, or start indoors 6-8 weeks early. Germination occurs in 7-14 days at 65-70 F. Thin or transplant seedlings to 12-18 inches apart in rows 18-24 inches apart. Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil. Plants tolerate poor soil and dry conditions once established.
Water regularly during establishment, then only as needed. Bee balm can spread by rhizomes—divide clumps every 2-3 years to maintain vigor. Provide air circulation to reduce powdery mildew. Attractive flowers draw pollinators and make excellent cut flowers.
About Bee Balm Wild Bergamot Seeds
Wild bergamot is a North American native long used in teas and remedies by Indigenous peoples. Its minty foliage was brewed as Oswego tea, and its blooms are still enjoyed today for both beauty and herbal use.
Also known as horsemint and purple bee balm, this hardy perennial is a favorite in pollinator gardens, prairies, and meadows. It provides nectar for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies while adding summer color to landscapes.
Leaves and flowers are edible, often used to flavor teas, salads, and baked goods, with a flavor similar to oregano and mint.
Stories/Tips From Our Gardeners
"Try planting bee balm near your vegetable patch—the flowers attract pollinators, and the minty foliage adds fragrance to the garden. Cutting stems after the first flush of blooms often encourages a second flowering later in the season."
