Growing Hidcote Blue Lavender in the Herb Garden
Lavender seeds experience a significant increase in germination if sown outdoors in the fall to lie dormant through winter, or stored in a freezer for about 3-4 weeks prior to spring sowing. After cold treatment, you can start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds 0.25 inches deep, and lightly press into the soil, keeping the germination temperature between 65-75°F. Once seedlings are ready to be transplanted, place them 12-18 inches apart.
This lavender variety is easy to maintain once established and is a great companion plant for tomatoes. It is drought-tolerant and has low nutritional needs, so avoid over-fertilizing. Prune the plant by cutting it back by one-third in the spring to encourage new growth.
Harvesting of Hidcote Blue Lavender
Harvest your lavender once the buds show their deep color, but before they are fully open. This is when the essential oils are at their peak. Using clean shears, cut the stems just above the first set of leaves, avoiding the woody part of the stem.
In the kitchen, Hidcote Blue lavender's fragrant flowers can be used in teas, desserts, and savory dishes. Its classic floral aroma adds a unique note to both sweet and savory creations.
