Growing Amish Pie Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow outdoors after frost when soil is warm, or start indoors 3 to 4 weeks early in biodegradable cells to avoid root disturbance. Plant 2 to 3 seeds per hill and thin to the strongest plant. Provide 36 to 48 inches between plants and 60 to 72 inches between rows. Keep evenly moist and mulch to regulate soil temperature and reduce weeds.
Feed with a balanced fertilizer at vining and again at early fruit set. Encourage pollinators for best yields. Train vines away from paths and support developing fruit off wet soil with boards or straw.
