Growing Corno Di Toro Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
To grow your peppers, prepare your seed starting trays and plant the seeds about 0.25 inches deep into the soil. Start the process about 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost date. You can choose either a seed starting mix like Minute Soil Coco Clair, or you can just choose well-draining soil. Make sure the soil stays moist, but don’t overwater your seeds. You can stick your pinky into the soil to see if it is dry below the surface. If it is, then give your plants a little water, but make sure you don’t overwater them. Keep your peppers in a warm spot for germination, somewhere around 80-90 F. You can use a grow light to create a warmer space that will help them germinate. After about 7-10 days, they should germinate, and you can move them to a cooler spot so they can be hardened off before you plant them in the garden. After they are a few inches tall, you can plant them in the garden or in planters! Plant the rows about 2-3 feet apart, and plant individual plants about 12-18 inches apart. Dig a hole and make sure the roots are covered completely!
Taking good care of your plants will ensure that you end up with a great harvest of Corno Di Toro peppers! Make sure to water them consistently. You can sprinkle some mulch around the base of the plant to keep the moisture in and suppress any weeds. Try companion planting with crops like marigolds and basil. This can help keep pests away and attract pollinators to your garden. If your plants get especially tall, you may need to give them some support with a trellis or cage to support the weight of the fruit. To help your plants grow, you can try giving them fertilizer full of phosphorus and calcium. Be sure to follow the instructions on your fertilizer and not over-fertilize them. Keep an eye on your plants and take action immediately if you see any pests or signs of disease.
Harvesting Corno Di Toro Peppers
These peppers are full size when they’ve grown about 6 to 10 inches long. They will either be a bright yellow or a bright green, and they should have a somewhat glossy sheen. They’ll be ripe somewhere between 90 and 100 days after transplanting. When the peppers have grown to their full size and color, you can harvest them with garden shears or a knife by cutting off the peppers, leaving a small stem on the pepper. Be sure to be gentle with the plant so you don’t damage the plant and it can keep producing fruit. Because this is a sweet variety, try not to harvest them too early, because they won’t have their full sweet flavor. Also try to avoid leaving them on the plant for too long, because overripe peppers might be a little bit bitter. Store them in a cool and dry place.

Tips From Our Gardeners
"Something that a lot of indoor gardeners don’t know is that your indoor potted plants can benefit from a little shake or movement, which will simulate the wind they would get outdoors. This can help promote pollination, as well as making your plants hardier."
