Growing Cayenne Long Slim in the Vegetable Garden
To plant Cayenne Long Slim, you will need to start the planting process about 6-8 weeks before your area’s last frost date. You can choose either a seed starting mix like Minute Soil Coco Clair, or you can just choose well-draining soil. The seeds should be planted about 0.25 inches deep. Make sure the soil stays moist, but don’t overwater your seeds. You can stick your pinky into the soil to see if it is dry below the surface. If it is, then give your plants a little water, but make sure you don’t overwater them. Keep your peppers in a warm spot for germination, somewhere around 80-90 F. You can use a grow light to create a warmer space that will help them germinate. After about 7-10 days, they should germinate, and you can move them to a cooler spot so they can be hardened off before you plant them in the garden. You should plant the rows about 2-3 feet apart, and the individual plants should be about 12-18 inches apart. Make sure to cover the roots completely!
Let's talk about giving your Cayenne Long Slim the treatment they need to grow into thriving plants. Consistent watering is key, especially during dry spells - these peppers don't like to be thirsty! Sprinkling mulch around the base of the plant can help retain moisture and can also help with suppressing weeds. Try companion planting with plants like marigolds and herbs like basil, which can help attract beneficial insects to the garden, as well as deterring pests. If your plants get especially tall, you may need to give them some support with a trellis or cage to support the weight of the fruit. To help your plants grow, you can try giving them fertilizer full of phosphorus and calcium. Be sure to follow the instructions on your fertilizer and not over-fertilize them. Keep an eye out for pests or diseases and make sure to address them immediately if you see signs.
Harvesting Cayenne Long Slim
You'll know Cayenne Long Slim are ready for harvest when they are about 4-6 inches long. They will be a bright red color. Because this is a hot variety, these peppers can be harvested prematurely or when they are fully ripe. When you’re harvesting, use a pair of scissors or a knife to cut the peppers off the plant, leaving a small stem. Make sure you’re gentle and don’t damage the plant. You should always wear gloves and wash your hands immediately after harvesting hot peppers.
