Growing Drumhead Cabbage in the Vegetable Garden
Sow Drumhead Cabbage seeds 0.25 inch deep in fertile, well-prepared soil. Direct sow in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked, or start indoors 4-6 weeks before your last expected frost, then transplant outdoors. Space plants 12-24 inches apart in rows 24-36 inches apart so the large flat heads have room to size-up.
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and mulch around plants to hold moisture and keep soil cool. Feed with a balanced organic fertilizer once or twice during the season. Watch for cabbage worms and other brassica pests, and use row covers or hand-picking as needed. Companion planting with dill, nasturtium, or onions can help deter pests and support healthy growth.
Harvesting Drumhead Cabbage
Harvest Drumhead Cabbage when the heads feel tight, heavy, and very firm when squeezed. Cut the head cleanly at the base with a sharp knife, leaving several wrapper leaves to protect the head. Remove damaged outer leaves and use fresh, or cure briefly in a cool, shaded place before long-term storage.
