Growing Non-GMO Indian Blanket Sunflower Flower Seeds
Indian Blanket sunflower seeds grow well in many growing zones. Directly sow the seeds when the soil temperature exceeds 45 F, even at night. Optionally, start the seeds inside 3-4 weeks before the soil warms up. Nonetheless, most gardeners have great success with the direct sow method. Plant the seeds in a choice area, free of weeds and in full sun. The seeds should germinate in about two weeks and grow rapidly enough that you can practically watch the progression.
These gorgeous single-stem annuals will die at the first hard frost. In mild winter areas where the seeds are not collected, volunteers can pop up the next year. However, there is no need to worry about volunteered taking over, as these showy sunflowers aren’t invasive or harmful. Indian Blanket sunflowers have average water requirements and can handle light variations in irrigation. This variety will not likely need staking except at the end of the season or during rough weather.
Indian Blanket Sunflower in the Flower Garden
Indian Blanket sunflowers are breathtaking to plant nearly anywhere. They are an excellent choice for involving kids or novice gardeners in their effortless growth. They can be a centerpiece or scattered in any bare patch of soil. Try interplanting with our Mardi Gras Blend sunflowers for a full range of sunflower colors. The two varieties are similar in height and habit. They thrive together visually and physically.
Harvesting Indian Blanket Sunflower
This variety does well as cut flowers for seasonal bouquets. When they are in full bloom, snip off the stem 12-18 inches below the flowerhead or at an adjoining branch. Keep the stems in cool, clean water for indoor beauty lasting 2-3 weeks! For interesting dried bouquets, bundle a few together and hang them upside down in a well-ventilated area for extended color into the winter months!
Indian Blanket sunflowers develop edible seeds. To easily harvest them, you will need one simple tool: a fine mesh bag that can be secured around the flower head. A seed-collecting bag is perfect for this. Once the petals have faded, cinch the bag around the flower head. Over the next 3-4 weeks, the seeds in the flowerhead will naturally fall into the bag!
About Indian Blanket Sunflower Garden Seeds
This flower can also be referred to as St Bartholomew’s Star, Flower of Peru, or Comb Flower.
Sunflowers can also be planted in deep pots. Select a planter that is at least 12-18 inches deep. Keep in mind that a sunflower in a pot still requires full sun to flourish. They can be grown indoors, but typically require supplemental light.
Indian Blanket sunflowers are perfect for those who love sunflowers but prefer a smaller or bushier habit for their landscape. Each plant will produce multiple blooms, as opposed to the traditional single-headed flowers.
Instead of harvesting the seeds, leave them on the flowers and the stalks will become zero-waste bird feeders in the autumn that attract all sorts of critters!
Expect a minimum of four weeks of constant color emanating from 4-8 inches wide blooms during their peak flowering season, with many blooms persisting from summer into fall!
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Indian Blanket sunflowers are a unique take on the more mainstream single-headed sunflower. I love them because you can enjoy many blooms of various colors from each plant."
