Growing Non-GMO Evening Sun Sunflower Flower Seeds
Evening Sun sunflower seeds are recommended for outdoor growth because of their large height. Evening Sun sunflowers can be started indoors for earlier color, but it is not necessary for them to thrive in most climates. Sow directly after the final frost in a sunny spot on the north end of the garden and sheltered from strong winds. Always plant tall varieties of sunflowers on the north end of a garden to avoid casting shade onto the rest of the garden. Evening Sun sunflowers are so vigorous that they will reach peak bloom in less than 3 months. If squirrels and chipmunks are very prevalent in your area, you may want to protect the seeds until they sprout. Small critters can sometimes dig them up for food.
Evening Sun sunflowers may need staking if plants are growing away from the support of a garden or fence; also, consider staking in preparation for high winds or inclement weather. Evening Sun sunflowers are quite resilient and typically very low maintenance in general. Trim off yellowing foliage as the summer progresses. Evening Sun sunflowers have undemanding water requirements.
Evening Sun Sunflower in the Flower Garden
Evening Sun sunflowers are beautiful and sturdy. Use these in cut flower gardens, native flower gardens, pollinator gardens, and cottagecore gardens. Scatter them in any bare spot of soil or intentionally plant them along a property line. No matter how you use them, they are sure to thrive and bring bright colors to the table!
Harvesting Evening Sun Sunflower
Evening Sun sunflowers have delicious and useful seeds. To collect them simply wait until the petals’ color has faded and then utilize a mesh bag. Place the mesh bag over the flowerhead and secure it. A large seed-collecting bag is great for this job. Over the next 3-4 weeks, the seeds will fully mature and release into the bag. When the flowerhead is empty, remove the bag and use the seeds for snacks, bird feeders, or next year’s crop!
These colorful flowers can be used for seasonal bouquets of deep, warm colors. When they are in full bloom, snip off the stem one to one and a half feet below the bloom. Tie a few stems together with a rubber band or string and suspend them upside down in a well-ventilated room for dried flowers in 2-3 weeks! Use the results in dry bouquets throughout the winter in place of faux flowers.
