Growing Non-GMO Black Russian Sunflower Flower Seeds
Black Russian sunflower seeds are recommended for outdoor growth because of their enormous height. Black Russian sunflowers do very well with directly sowing the seeds; however, earlier blooms can be achieved by germination indoors and transplanting outdoors immediately after the last spring frost. Otherwise, sow directly outdoors after the final frost in a warm spot on the north side of the garden. Choose a spot that is sheltered from strong winds. Plant 2-3 Black Russian sunflower seeds per hole, spaced according to the suggestions provided.
Black Russian sunflowers may need staking; especially if they are growing alone or if high wind conditions are expected. Remove any yellow or brown foliage as the summer progresses. Black Russian sunflowers can handle mild drought, but for the biggest, brightest blooms, water whenever the soil is fully dried.
Black Russian Sunflower in the Flower Garden
Use Black Russian sunflowers in your annual or perennial flower garden as a backdrop or a border. They succeed when cultivated in rows, blocks, or singles. Scatter them in any bare spot of soil, or cultivate a line for zero-waste bird feeders! Black Russian sunflowers fit into a cottage, native, cut, prairie, and meadow flower gardens. They are native to many areas of North America and look right at home in an assortment of landscapes!
Harvesting Black Russian Sunflower
Black Russian sunflowers have delicious and useful seeds. To collect them, simply wait until the vibrancy of the petals has faded and then obtain a mesh bag. Place the mesh bag over the flowerhead and secure it on the stem. A large seed-collecting bag is great for this purpose. Over the next 3-4 weeks, the seeds will fully mature and release into the bag. When the flowerhead has emptied, remove the bag and use the seeds for snacks, bird feeders, or next year’s crop!
These high-contrast blooms can be used as cut flowers for a variety of arrangements that need some joyful yellow. When they are in full bloom, snip off the stem with sharp scissors. Store in cool, clean water for indoor color, lasting at least 1-2 weeks. Change out the water daily for best results. Optionally, tie a few stems together with a rubber band and hang them upside down in a well-ventilated but sheltered place for dried flowers in 14-21 days!
