Growing Non-GMO Candystripe Cosmos Flower Seeds
Candystripe Cosmos is a drought-tolerant full-sun performer and most commonly sown directly after the frost but, for earliest blooms, begin seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Germinate them in a warm area (at least 60 F soil temperature) and not buried too deep. Harden off the seedlings gradually and be sure the danger of frost has passed before planting them outdoors. Expect to see blooms in 5-7 weeks that last all summer!
Deadhead the spent blooms regularly to encourage more flower development and an attractive branching habit. Let some develop into the seed heads towards the end of the season if you wish to collect seeds. Once established, these plants require little supplemental water except in drought conditions. Until they fully establish, they will benefit from regular irrigations that slowly taper off. Avoid fertilizer for this species. Any amount of fertilization will encourage foliage and not blooms.
Candystripe Cosmos in the Flower Garden
Cosmos seeds are a favorite for kids or novice gardeners because they are a low-maintenance grow tolerant to hot and dry gardens. Candystripe Cosmos plants are perfect for large fields, wildflower gardens, and mass plantings.
Harvesting Candystripe Cosmos plants
Candystripe Cosmos plants are perfect if you wish to have a cut flower garden but want to reduce the amount of water required for irrigation. These flowers make charming bouquets all summer long. To harvest cut a flower stalk as far down as possible, and immediately place it in cool, clean water. They may be harvested in the morning at full bloom or just before. Change the water daily for extended color. Flower food is for sale in powder form to add to water, which can prolong the vitality of the blooms.
