History
Hard red winter wheat was introduced to North America by European Mennonites. Initially, winter wheat was imported from Ukraine for planting, until settlers realized how they could cultivate the wheat for midwest climates. Hard red winter wheat was especially valuable because it could overwinter and withstand the harsh temperatures of the Midwest. This wheat gets its name from its husk, which is a dark red color, it is a versatile and hearty wheat.
