Growing Organic Cinnamon Basil in the Herb Garden
Basil is a warm-weather crop grown both indoors and out. For earliest starts, begin indoors 6-8 weeks prior to final frost. Plant 4-6 seeds .25 inches deep per cell or 3-4 inches apart in the garden in moderately moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Germinates in 5-10 days, thinning back to 1-2 plants per pot or every 9-12 inches in the garden as true leaves establish. Harden off seedlings if transplanting outside.
Harvest, prune, and pinch regularly to encourage growth.
Harvesting of Organic Cinnamon Basil
Harvest/prune the plants before they set flowers to keep the plant producing fresh leaves throughout the season. Harvest about once a month. A shot of liquid nitrogen fertilizer, at pruning time, if your soil is not particularly fertile, will help the plants recover. Eat basil often and dry or freeze leaves throughout the summer. Make your final harvest before the first frost of fall, as the plant will not survive the cold.
About Organic Cinnamon Basil Garden Seeds
In Mexico, Cinnamon Basil is made into an herbal tea. In Ancient Egypt, this aromatic type of basil was part of embalming. Cinnamon Basil plants produce methyl cinnamate, the component which gives off that bold spicy scent and toasty, sweet flavor. Add Cinnamon Basil to pumpkin pie, cookies or even baked Cinnamon Basil pears.
Stories/Tips From Our Gardeners
"I love the small of this one as much as the taste. Keep a pot right next to the patio where it will get brushed regularly by passers!"
