How to Grow Haa Sing Gourd
Germinate seeds by soaking them in warm water for 24hrs and then placing them on a moist paper towel in a dark container. In zones 5 or 6, begin growing the seeds indoors before the last frost and transfer them outdoors, post-frost, after a hardening-off period. In zones 7 or higher, germinate the seeds indoors and then directly sow them into the growing bed. Luffa Gourds do not transplant well, be sure to get the seedlings to their permanent growing spot fast.
Haa Sing Luffa Gourd needs a trellis to climb up throughout the growing season. Protect the plant from any temperatures below 50℉. Provide ample nitrogen in the soil via fertilizer, compost, or a nitrogen fixator intercrop (such as soybeans). Prune the plant periodically throughout development to only have one lateral vine. In conditions with an extended growing season, remove the first few blooms allowing the plant to establish more before fruiting.
Harvesting Haa Sing Gourd
For consumption, harvest the gourds when they are bright green, firm, and less than six inches long. For shower luffa harvest, leave the gourds on the plant until they are brown and soft. Then, gently peel away the skin and shake out the seeds.
Culinary Tips
Eat the young gourds as soon as possible for maximum freshness. Haa Sing gourds can be cut up and cooked similarly to other gourds like zucchini, wax gourd, and summer squash. Try adding them to stews, curries, or soups.
