Growing Cascadura Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
Kickstart your Cascadura sweet pepper plants by sowing seeds indoors. This initial step is essential, as it protects the young plants from the harsh outdoor environment and gives them a head start. Plant the seeds about eight weeks before the last expected frost in your area. Opt for a high-quality seed starting mix in small pots or trays, planting the seeds about .25 inch deep. The soil should be moist but not soggy and placed in a warm area to encourage germination. Expect to see sprouts within 7-14 days. Adequate light is crucial at this stage, so ensure they get plenty of sunlight or use a grow light to avoid spindly growth.
Once the frost has passed and your seedlings have grown sturdy, it's time to introduce them to the great outdoors through a process known as hardening off. This involves gradually exposing the plants to outdoor conditions over a period of about a week. Begin with a few hours of outdoor time in a partially shaded area, progressively increasing their exposure to sunlight and outdoor temperatures. This gentle introduction helps the plants adjust and reduces transplant shock.
Cascadura sweet peppers are versatile and can flourish in garden plots, raised beds, or even large containers, provided they are placed in a location where sunlight is plentiful. These peppers cherish warmth and well-draining soil. Space them about 18-24 inches apart in 2-3 foot space rows to ensure they have ample room to grow and for air to circulate freely around them. This spacing also aids in disease prevention and allows for easier maintenance.
As your Cascadura peppers grow, they may reach up to two or three feet in height. Providing support with stakes or small cages can help manage their growth and prevent the branches from bending or breaking under the weight of the fruit. Regular watering is key to keeping the soil moist, but be careful not to overwater. A balanced fertilizer can also be applied periodically to promote healthy growth and fruiting.
Harvesting Cascadura Peppers
The true magic begins when the peppers start to form. Initially, the peppers will appear green and gradually ripen to a vibrant red. They can be harvested at any point, depending on your preferred texture and flavor. Harvesting usually occurs around 75 to 90 days after planting. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the peppers from the plant, being careful not to damage the stems or branches.

Stories From Our Gardeners
"Pepper seeds germinate best in very warm conditions. I have found that 75-80 F soil is best. That’s why, for a northerner like me, a heating mat for seed starting is crucial. Also, once they sprout, sometimes just a window isn’t enough direct sunlight. Grow lights have been my companion when it comes to seed starting. Without them, pepper seedlings tend to get leggy and don’t do well once planted outdoors."
