Growing Non-GMO Columbine Double Mixed Flower Seeds

Double Mixed Columbine seeds have wildflower-like hardiness and are most commonly broadcasted directly in the fall or just after the frost in early spring. Columbine seeds thrive from an over-winter frost (cold stratification) but will still bloom if they are started indoors 4-6 weeks before the final frost of the spring. Seeds will germinate with light in 14-21 days. Plant 3-4 Double Mixed Columbine seeds in rich, evenly moist, and well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Seeds may also be broadcasted for a wildflower appearance. Double Mixed Columbine seeds prefer cool, shady gardens and will struggle in early summer if exposed to long hours of direct sun and heat. Do not let the soil dry out, but do not let the roots sit in water either. Saturate the soil at the time of watering and then allow the top inch of soil to completely dry between irrigations.

For earlier flowers, start the seeds indoors and transplant them once they have two true leaves and good roots. Columbine typically blooms from spring to summer in its second year and will die back at the first frost but will return the following year. There is only a need to fertilize if the soil is especially barren. Use a diluted feed if necessary. Keep weeds down, particularly in the early stages so that the plants can become well-rooted. Cut back dead blooms to prolong color and prevent undesired reseeding.
