Growing Non-GMO Plumed Celosia New Look Flower Seeds

Plumed Celosia seeds can be directly sown or started indoors 4 weeks before the final frost for prompter blooms. If growing indoors, harden off the seedlings after they have at least two true leaves before transplanting outside to avoid shock. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep and keep the soil moist but not soaked. Apply well-rotted compost or fertilizer every two to three weeks for optimal color show.

This variety of celosia does not usually require staking. The flowers can last a month or more and regenerate faster if deadheaded regularly. When the plume is ⅓-½ brown, snip it off to allow for more blooms. Celosia plants of all kinds are extremely sensitive to cold temperatures and will die at first exposure to frost. To extend the life of the flowers a few extra weeks, transfer them to containers and bring them inside before the first frost. Once the blooms die they should be discarded; they don’t do well with overwintering.

It is also popular to enjoy dried celosia blooms indoors for an extended period. To dry them, harvest the mature blooms when they are free of dew and excess moisture, and at their pinnacle of beauty. Cut the stems so they are as long as possible and keep them in water until ready to process to maintain their vigor. Bundle four to eight stems together and hang upside down in a warm, dry location. Protect them from direct sunlight and space the bundles apart to encourage even airflow and drying.
