Growing Non-GMO Crested Celosia Prestige Scarlet Flower Seeds
Celosia seeds can be direct sown or started indoors for late spring blooms. If planting indoors, germinate the seeds one month before the last frost date; harden off the seedlings after they have 2-4 true leaves to avoid shock. Plant the seeds ¼ inch deep and keep the soil moist but not saturated until germination has occurred. A greenhouse lid is valuable for achieving the proper environment. Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted compost every 2-3 weeks to encourage vibrancy in color; it comes from the nutrients in the soil!
This variety of celosia may require staking if some of the blooms are particularly dense. The flowers can last up to a month, but then need deadheading to speed up reblooming. When the bottom one-third of the flower is brown, snip it off at the base of the flower stalk. Celosia plants of all kinds are highly sensitive to cold temperatures and will die at exposure to frost. To prolong the life of the flowers by up to one month weeks, transfer them to containers and bring them inside before the first frost of winter. Once the blooms die, they should be trashed or composted, as they don’t overwinter well.
Prestige Scarlet Crested Celosias in the Flower Garden
Celosias are typically used by incorporating them into a flower bed of colorful annuals. Not only do these pair well with more traditional bedding plants such as petunias and violas, but interplanting different types of celosia creates a complex masterpiece of visual interest! We also recommend the exceptional and dramatic look of a mass planting.
Harvesting Prestige Scarlet Crested Celosias
This variety of Celosia is often used to create a memorable cut flower arrangement! Harvest them at peak maturity and quickly transfer to cool water. They should last for multiple weeks if the water is changed out every 3-4 days.
It is also popular to enjoy dried celosia blooms for months indoors. To dry them, harvest the blooms early in the morning after the dew has dried and when they are at prime attractiveness. Cut the stems as long as possible and keep them in water for a short time to retain the vitality until processing. Bundle 5-8 stems together with string or a rubber band and hang upside down in a warm, dry place. Protect them from direct sunlight to conserve the color; space the bundles apart to encourage airflow and even dryness.
About Prestige Scarlet Crested Celosia Garden Seeds
Celosia plants are choice for pots and containers. One plant needs a 6-8 inch pot. Potted arrangements of celosias often feature curly kale for foliage and pansies for color.
The intense color of these plants also attract many pollinators such as bees. Plant a few close to your vegetable garden to get the pollen moving.
Celosia is a member of the Amaranth family. This variety has different shaped blooms with wonderful bright colors that are undeniably eye-catching!
Expect these dense and vibrant blooms to be showy from summer to the first frost.
