Growing Morden Early Cucumber in the Vegetable Garden
< p> Direct-sow Morden Early seeds 0.5 inch deep once the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach at least 65 F, or get a head start by sowing indoors in peat pots 2 to 4 weeks ahead of transplanting. Space plants 12 to 24 inches apart, allowing 36 to 48 inches between rows. Because the vines stay compact compared to standard cucumber varieties, this variety also performs well in containers.
Keep soil consistently moist, especially once vines begin flowering and setting fruit. Harvest often and don't let fruit linger on the vine, since Morden Early doesn't hold well once mature and regular picking is key to keeping plants productive throughout the season.
Harvesting Morden Early Cucumber
Pick fruit once it reaches 5 to 7 inches long, while the skin is still firm and the spines are soft. Check plants often, ideally every day or two once production begins, since fruit left on the vine too long will turn seedy and stop new fruit from setting. Cut or snap cucumbers from the vine rather than pulling to avoid damaging the plant.
About Morden Early Cucumber Garden Seeds
Morden Early was developed at the Morden Research Station in Manitoba, Canada, in 1956, bred specifically for the region's short, cool growing season.
Its compact vines and reliable early maturity have made it a longtime favorite for gardeners in northern climates or anywhere with a limited frost-free window.
As a dual-purpose variety, it performs equally well picked small for pickling or left a bit larger for fresh slicing and salads.
Tips From Our Gardeners
Don't skip a harvest day if you can help it. Because this variety fruits so early and vigorously, missing even a day or two of picking can mean overgrown, seedy cucumbers and a noticeable slowdown in new fruit.
