Growing Non-GMO Sensitive Plant Mimosa Flower Seeds
For earliest blooms, begin Sensitive Plant mimosa seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the final frost date. Seeds will quickly germinate in 5-10 days with full lighting and, once germinated, move to fluorescent grow light until two sets of true leaves have developed. Transplant seedlings to an indoor container or pot and harden off if transplanting outside. Mimosa seeds can also be sown directly once the frost has passed. Sensitive Plant mimosa thrives in well-drained soil. Plants will benefit from partial shade during severe summers and are not tolerant of arid gardens prone to drought conditions.
Mimosa seeds require scarification before planting. This means that the seed coating needs to be nicked or scraped to trigger the germination process. The easiest way to accomplish this is to take some high-grit sandpaper and gently scrape each seed before planting it. Be careful to only scrape the seed coating and not the inside at all. Mimosa is used to growing in low-nutrient soils in its native lands. There is no need to fertilize unless the leaves look yellow. Water when the soil dries. It does not do well with overly wet soil.
Sensitive Plant Mimosa in the Flower Garden
Sensitive Plant mimosa seeds are a perfect grow for adding a brush of grace to window boxes, rock gardens, hanging baskets, or keeping anywhere guests or children can touch and watch the leaves recoil right before their eyes. They can even be a ground cover in mild climates!
Indoor Use of Sensitive Plant Mimosa
Sensitive Plants make wonderful houseplants for any growing zone. Provide them with at least 8 hours of sunlight each day. If the leaves do not appear to be opening during the day, this means that the plant is not receiving enough light. Water sparingly in the winter. The humidity of most homes is sufficient. If your home is on the drier side, run a humidifier nearby.
About Sensitive Plant Mimosa Garden Seeds
Prune your sensitive plant regularly to keep it full and bushy. Pruning can allow you to train it into more of a bush, a climbing plant, or a trailing plant. Prune any time of the year.
Mimosa, AKA Sensitive Plant is an internationally famous plant because it is seismonastic (responds to physical touch and movements) and at night, the leaves will also fold and bend in reaction to the darkness. It is said that, at night, the leaves assume a folded or sleeping posture. When the plant is touched or in response to applying heat, the leaves can move very rapidly, and the plant can snap its leaves shut. But too much heat and pressure will cause the leaf to wilt altogether.
Mimosa pudica, is native to the warm perennial tropics of South and Central America but has been found thriving in similar climates in the South Pacific and United States.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"One of my first real horticultural failures in school was getting Sensitive Plant seeds to germinate. I nicked the seed coating too much and damaged the seed! But don’t worry; be gentle and know that once germinated, these are very easy to care for."
