Growing Non-GMO Liatris Spiked Gayfeather Flower Seeds
Liatris seeds require 4-6 weeks of cold treatment in order to germinate. Either sow the seeds outdoors in the fall or place them in the refrigerator before planting them in the spring. Spiked Gayfeather liatris seeds are adaptable and frost-hardy and can be sown indoors or outdoors. For the earliest and most vibrant blooms, begin seeds 10-12 weeks prior to the frost and transplant to a warm and sunny spot in the garden if transplanting outside. Young plants may need staking before establishing. Spiked Gayfeather liatris is a vigorous full-sun performer with little maintenance needs. Plants are known to tolerate gardens prone to heat, drought, humidity, and poor soils, but prefer well-drained gardens with fertile soil. Do not overwater.
While germinating and after germination, seeds prefer temperatures above 50°F, even at night. Keep the soil moist until germination occurs and until transplantation nears. Harden off any seedlings that were started indoors before fully transplanting outdoors. Although Liatris has amazing pest and disease resistance, young plants may be susceptible to rabbits and should be protected. Liatris does not usually bloom until the second year after being started from seed. For overwintering potted plants, do not bring them indoors but shelter them in a garage or cold frame with mulch heaped on top of the roots. Option to also bury the pot in the soil for the winter. They require a cold period of dormancy to flower each summer.
