Growing Non-GMO Blue Moon Cat Mint Flower Seeds
The best time to grow catmint is March to May if you have mild winters or May through June if you have cold winters. Nepeta seeds have better germination rates after stratification (a cold treatment). Place them in the freezer overnight and then soak them in water for half to a whole day before planting. Cat Mint flower seeds can be sown directly after the frost but, for strongest starts, begin indoors 6-8weeks prior and then transplant to a warm, sunny place in the garden or home. Lightly cover the seeds and water with a mister. Gardeners usually have greater success when germinating these seeds with a heating mat under the growing medium.
When transplanting seedlings, it is necessary to slowly acclimatize them to their new environment by placing them outdoors for a few hours a day and gradually increasing the duration until they are ready to transplant; this process is 'hardening off.' Catmint prefers dry conditions and only needs supplemental water if there are extended periods of drought. It is best to keep catmint contained in pots or to cut it back each year after the flowering flush. In optimum climates, it has taken over garden beds if not properly kept in check. Prune the plants back by 1/3 each year. No need to fertilize. Once established plants are thriving, division is the simplest form of propagation.
