Growing Non-GMO Easter Bonnet Series Alyssum Flower Seeds
Alyssum seeds are very hardy and should be sown straight into the garden bed after the danger of frost has passed. Do not plant outside until after the danger of frost has passed. For early spring blooms in cooler zones, germinate the seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost under a grow light and in warm soil, at least 60°F. Before transplanting, harden off the seedlings by gradually lengthening the time they spend outdoors. To increase the drainage of your soil, work compost, sand, or ground-up mulch into the soil.
Water the plants regularly but ensure that the leaves and the top 1-2 inches of soil can fully dry between irrigations. Although it is not necessary, pruning off any branches whose leaves have completed blooming can encourage a more desirable and compact growth habit. In exceptionally hot and arid climates, provide part shade and a coating of mulch at the base.
Easter Bonnet Series Alyssum in the Flower Garden
These Alyssums will gladly attract beneficial insects of all kinds to pollinate your landscape or garden. Alyssum is also the perfect plant to fill in areas and prevent weeds while spring bloomers like Arabis or tulips are inactive. Similarly, it works nicely underneath larger plants like roses and clematis to protect the soil and roots.
Landscape Use of Easter Bonnet Series Alyssum
Easter Bonnet Series Alyssum is perfect for pots and containers. It easily bulks out the lower area and spills over the edge to allow other, taller flowers room to bloom above it. It is also used in some pest management practices for its ability to draw insects to the garden that eat or sabotage common garden pests such as aphids and spider mites.
About Easter Bonnet Series Alyssum Garden Seeds
In zones 9 and higher, Alyssum can also be grown as a perennial but should be kept in check with regular pruning.
Alyssum is considered invasive in some locations of the world. Check with your local extension about laws and policies if you have questions specific to your area. When in doubt, keep it contained to a pot, avoid reseeding, and remove the plant at the end of the season.
Lobularia maritima, more commonly known as Alyssum, Sweet Allison, or Sweet Alyssum, is a low-growing species native to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. Sweet Alyssum is one of the most fragrant blooms available and one of the most award-winning. The genus name Lobularia is derived from the Latin word lobules which means "small pod."
