Growing Texas Grano 502 Onion in the Vegetable Garden
As a short-day variety, Texas Grano 502 does best sown in early fall in mild-winter regions for a spring harvest, though it can also be started in early spring elsewhere. Sow seeds 0.25 inch deep directly in the garden, or start indoors 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting out. Space plants 4 to 6 inches apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart to give bulbs room to size up.
Keep the soil consistently moist, since onions are shallow-rooted and need reliable watering, especially once bulbs begin to form. Fertilize regularly throughout the growing season, as onions are heavy feeders, and keep the bed weed-free since young onion plants compete poorly with weeds.
Harvesting Texas Grano 502 Onion
Bulbs are ready to harvest once the tops begin to yellow and fall over, typically 110 to 165 days from planting depending on when they were started.
