Growing Organic Black Magic Kale in the Vegetable Garden
< p> Direct-sow Black Magic kale seeds 0.5 inch deep in early spring or late summer for a fall crop, or start indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost date for an earlier harvest. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 18 to 36 inches apart, thinning seedlings once they have their first true leaves.
Keep the soil consistently moist for the best leaf quality, and fertilize regularly since kale is a heavy feeder. Harvest by clipping individual outer leaves as the plant grows, rather than cutting the whole plant at once, to keep it producing over a long season.
Harvesting Black Magic Kale
Begin harvesting once leaves reach a usable size, generally starting from the bottom of the plant and working upward. Clip individual leaves rather than pulling to avoid damaging the plant, and leave the top growing point intact so the plant continues producing. Flavor improves and sweetens after a light frost, making this variety especially good for a fall harvest.
