Growing Valerian in the Herb Garden

Sow seeds 0.125 inch deep or press lightly into the surface, as light aids germination. Direct sow in spring or fall, or start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost. Transplant or thin seedlings to 12-24 inches apart with rows 24-36 inches apart. Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Keep soil consistently moist and mulch to retain moisture.

Valerian forms a clump and sends up tall flowering stems in early to mid-summer. Remove spent flower heads if you want to limit self-sowing. Companion options include chamomile and lemon balm in a calm garden setting. Feed lightly with compost in spring and maintain even moisture during active growth.
