Growing Non-GMO Thunbergia Alata Mix Flower Seeds
Alata Mix is easy to grow from seed and recommended for direct sowing outdoors after the frost. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the final frost for earlier blooms. Be sure to harden off seedling carefully when transplanting outdoors. Transplant once all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures remain above 50 F. Cut back spent foliage, leaves, and blooms after flowering to prolong vitality into the fall. Alata Mix seeds will benefit from partial shade during severe summers. Alata Mix tolerates some shade, but too much shade will decrease flowering and vigor. Train thunbergia to climb up a trellis or other structure to display its flowers more readily.
Thunbergia blooms throughout the first summer and will die back at the first frost but will return next year in optimal climates. We recommend using a slow-release fertilizer or working organic compost into the soil each spring to boost growth. Deadhead regularly through the season and quickly trim any declining foliage as well. Fertilize every 2 or 3 weeks when in bloom, and once a month all season long when growing in containers. It is possible to overwinter thunbergias indoors but keep a keen eye for spider mites and whiteflies. They have been known to flower in the winter as well if conditions stay favorable and above 60 F.
Thunbergia Alata Mix in the Flower Garden
Thunbergias are perfect for any ornamental flower garden. The beautiful vines readily climb up a trellis or obelisk and leave room for other flowers below. Or, let the vine trail on the ground to shelter roots and soil. They even look spectacular when allowed to cascade down a hanging basket! The attractive colors go well in many situations.

About Thunbergia Alata Mix Garden Seeds
Thunbergias are remarkably flexible when it comes to style! Pair them with elephant ears and lilies for a tropical look. Choose hyacinth bean and morning glory to have a similar look. Or even choose zinnias and salvia for an unforgettable contrast!
Thunbergia alata is one of the countless varieties of Black-Eyed Susan and is native to warm, tropical regions of Africa and southern Asia. The genus Thunbergia honors Carl Peter Thunberg, an 18th Century Swedish botanist, doctor, and explorer of the continent and is often referred to as the "father of South African botany."
Tips From Our Gardeners
”I like to think of thunbergias as the prim cousin of rudbeckias. They both are beautiful and find their place easily in a variety of gardens and landscapes, but thunbergias are slightly more accustomed to the trimmed and refined way of life. They are often featured in pots and containers with a decorative trellis, while rudbeckias will grow almost anywhere!"
