How to Grow Yukina Savoy Cabbage
In temperate areas, sow seeds in spring/summer after the last frost or late summer/early fall. Plant year-round in tropical climates. Plan on needing to fertilize. Exposure to frost or prolonged temperatures below 50 F may result in bolting. Never allowing the soil to dry out minimizes potential problems. It is recommended to mulch after planting to reduce the likelihood of rots and to improve soil moisture.
Note: Bud differentiation and bolting result from low temperatures of 41 F for a week or 50 F for two weeks. For spring harvest, transplant seedlings with 5-7 true leaves raised at 73-75 F during the day and over 53 F at night. Avoid planting brassicas in the same spot more often than every sixth year.
Harvesting Yukina Savoy Cabbage
Harvest at any stage. The baby leaves are ready around day 25; the mature leaves are typically at their prime around days 40-45. Cut off individual leaves to prolong the harvest, or cut down the entire plant and harvest as a head. Collect all leaves before a hard frost hits, unless growing under cloches.
Culinary Tips
Yukina Savoy leaves are delightful in salads. They also cook down very well, making them ideal for stir-fries and adding toward the end of cooking soups.
