Growing Non-GMO Wheat Celosia Flamingo Series Flower Seeds
Celosia seeds can be directly sown or started indoors for late spring blooms. If planting indoors, germinate the seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost date; harden off the seedlings after they have two or more true leaves to avoid shock. Plant the seeds 0.25 inch deep and keep the soil moist but not saturated. A humidity lid is useful for achieving the right environment but should be removed promptly following germination. Fertilize or apply well-rotted compost every other week; color vibrancy comes from fertile soil.
This variety of celosia usually does not require staking due to its feathery blooms. The flowers can last up to a month, but then require deadheading to bloom again. They brown from the bottom to the top; when the bottom one-third of the flower is brown, snip it off at the base of the flower stalk. Celosia plants of all kinds are sensitive to cold temperatures and will die at any exposure to frost. To extend the vitality of the flowers for additional weeks, transfer them to containers and bring them inside before the first frost of winter. Once the blooms die, they should be trashed or thrown to the compost pile as they don’t do well with overwintering.
Flamingo Series Wheat Celosias in the Flower Garden
Celosias are typically incorporated into a flower bed of colorful annuals. Especially with this variety, we also recommend the striking and cottage look of a mass planting. Not only do these pair well with more traditional bedding plants such as alyssum and violas, but companion planting different celosias creates a complex masterpiece of visual interest!
Harvesting Flamingo Series Wheat Celosias
This variety of Celosia is often used to create a striking cut flower statement! Harvest them at full maturity and quickly transfer them to cool water. They should last for multiple weeks if the water is changed out at least weekly.
It is also widespread to enjoy dried celosia blooms for months indoors. To dry them, harvest the mature blooms when they are dry and at peak beauty. Cut the stems as long as possible and keep them in water for a short time to retain the vigor until processing. Bundle four to eight stems together with string or a rubber band and hang upside down in a warm, dry location. Protect them from direct sunlight to preserve the color and space the bundles apart to encourage airflow and even drying.
About Flamingo Series Celosia Garden Seeds
Celosia plants do well in pots or containers. One plant requires at least a 6-8 inch pot. Potted arrangements of celosias often feature colorful begonia foliage and tall grasses for height.
Celosias also attract many pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Plant a few near your vegetable garden to get the pollen circulating.
This variety gives an adorable cottage feel to any garden, bed, or border.
Expect these exotic and vibrant blooms to be around from summer to the first frost.
Dried celosia blooms look fantastic in fall arrangements for special occasions like Thanksgiving.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"Flamingo Series is known as a ‘wheat-style’ celosia because of it’s plume shape. They are perfect for adding height. Some gardeners report these getting much taller than anticipated."
