Growing Violet Queen Cauliflower in the Vegetable Garden
Sow Violet Queen cauliflower seeds 0.5 inch deep either directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed, or start indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost date for an earlier harvest. Transplant seedlings out once they are 4 to 5 inches tall, spacing plants 18 to 24 inches apart with 24 to 30 inches between rows to give heads plenty of room to develop.
Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, since inconsistent watering can lead to smaller or poorly formed heads. Cauliflower is a heavy feeder, so work compost into the bed before planting and fertilize regularly. Unlike white varieties, Violet Queen does not need to be blanched, since its purple curds naturally develop good color without shading.
Harvesting Violet Queen Cauliflower
Heads are ready to harvest once the curds reach a good size and are firm and tightly formed, generally around 85 days from sowing. Cut the head from the stalk with a sharp knife, leaving a few wrapper leaves attached for protection. Harvest promptly once heads reach full size, as they can quickly become loose or bolt in warm weather. Use fresh for the best color and flavor, since the vivid purple hue fades to green once cooked.
About Violet Queen Cauliflower Garden Seeds
Violet Queen is a purple-headed cauliflower variety prized for the striking color contrast its curds create against its dark green foliage.
The variety was selected for its productivity and reliable head formation, making it a popular choice for both home gardeners and market growers looking to add visual interest to the vegetable garden.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, Violet Queen owes its purple pigment to anthocyanins, the same antioxidant compounds found in other purple vegetables, giving it a nutritional edge alongside its good looks.
Tips From Our Gardeners
For the most vivid purple color, harvest heads promptly once mature. Curds left too long in the garden, especially in warm or sunny conditions, can start to fade or take on a duller tone.
