Non-GMO Cicer arietinum is a popular cover crop traditionally sown in the fall to replenish nitrogen content in garden soil while breaking up tough soils. Whether grown between seasons or alongside a crop as a nitrogen-boosting companion plant, heirloom garbanzo bean seeds are traditionally sown for warm-weather mowing, then tilled and mulched into a sustainable Organic green mulch. Unlike many taller legumes and grains, garbanzo is a low-growing crop and does not provide much relief against erosion and runoff. However, as a legume, Organic garbanzo will benefit immensely from a legume inoculant to help it maximize nitrogen production in the soil.
