Growing Snowball A Cauliflower in the Vegetable Garden
Start Snowball A seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost date, sowing 0.25 inch deep, or direct sow once the danger of frost has passed. Transplant seedlings out once they're 4 to 6 inches tall, spacing plants 18 to 24 inches apart in rows 24 to 36 inches apart to give heads plenty of room to develop.
Keep the soil consistently moist and fertilize regularly, since cauliflower is a heavy feeder and inconsistent watering can lead to smaller or poorly formed heads. Unlike white varieties that require manual blanching, Snowball A's inner leaves naturally curl around the developing head, protecting its color without extra work.
Harvesting Snowball A Cauliflower
Heads are ready to harvest once they reach 5 to 7 inches across and are still smooth and tightly formed, generally around 55 days from sowing. Cut the head from the stalk with a sharp knife, leaving a few wrapper leaves attached for protection during storage. Harvest promptly once heads reach full size, since curds left too long can turn rough-textured and lose their mild flavor.
