Growing Green Express Cabbage in the Vegetable Garden
Sow Green Express seeds 0.25 inch deep either directly in the garden or in trays indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost date, keeping the soil around 75 to 85 F for the quickest, most even germination. Transplant seedlings outdoors 2 to 3 weeks before the last frost, spacing plants 15 to 18 inches apart in rows 24 to 36 inches apart to give each compact head room to fill out.
Because it is such a heavy feeder, work plenty of compost or aged manure into the bed before planting and keep the soil consistently moist, especially as heads begin to form, since fluctuating moisture can cause splitting. A light mulch helps hold moisture and keep roots cool through warm spells, and a mid-season feeding of compost tea will keep growth steady all the way to harvest.
Harvesting Green Express Cabbage
Heads are ready as soon as they feel firm and solid when squeezed, usually right around the fifty-day mark. Cut the head at the base with a sharp knife, or twist and pull the whole plant to break some of the roots and reduce splitting in the row. Harvested heads keep well in the refrigerator for several weeks, and leaving the outer leaves and root in the ground can sometimes coax a second, smaller flush of side heads.
