Growing Non-GMO Swizzle Series Zinnia Flower Seeds
Zinnias can be started indoors 5-6 weeks before the last frost for the earliest blooms. Transplant to a container or outdoors once two sets of true leaves have been established. Otherwise, sow them directly in the garden bed or field after the last frost of the spring, when the soil has warmed to about 72 F. Cover the seeds lightly and mist them until soaked. Keep in mind that seeds germinate best at 70-80 F. Established zinnias thrive in low water conditions, but may require a bit of extra water to help them in the beginning. However, be sure the soil and seedlings dry out between irrigations; zinnias do not do well in overly wet soil and thrive in drier conditions.
Swizzle Series Zinnias bloom all summer and will expire at the first hard frost of autumn. They are very persistent and may produce new blooms into November in some regions. Expect them to reseed; however, the seeds may not survive harsh winters. If you want to stop reseeding, cut the flower heads after the bloom fades and remove the entire plant before the seeds start to develop in the fall. In zones 8 and higher, seeds can also be sown in the fall for winter color.
Swizzle Series Zinnia in the Flower Garden
Swizzle Series Zinnia Flower Seeds mature to a compact bush with lush blooms tidy enough for indoor gardening, yet robust enough to flourish outside in the summer heat. Swizzle Series Zinnia seeds grow the perfect border to any flower bed, or as a fresh-cut compliment to your next summertime arrangement.
Harvesting Swizzle Series Zinnia
Harvest these blooms for small cut flower bouquets. Make a clean cut at the base of the flower stalk and store it in cool water. The flowers of the zinnias are also edible! Pluck the petals when the flowers bloom and use them as garnishes. They are said to have a mildly bitter taste.
About Swizzle Series Zinnia Garden Seeds
Zinnias are safe for humans to eat, but may be toxic when ingested by animals like livestock or dogs. Contact your veterinarian with any questions.
Native to Mexico, Central America, and parts of the American southwest. The genus zinnia refers to the German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn, who is first known for writing of the flower before it was brought to Europe in the 1750s.
Expect 4 inch-wide blossoms, which stand alone on 1-foot-tall flower stalks.
Swizzle Series is a hybrid variety of the Zinnia grandiflora created by Kansas State University Research and Extension. University Horticulturists developed and tested the short Zinnia Swizzle Series for two years: measuring the plant's vigor, floriferousness (ability to produce many flowers), and visual impact against the challenging prairie climate. Each year, researchers from KSU introduce dozens of plant hybrids to the public just as vigorous and rewarding as the Swizzle Series.
Zinnias are known for attracting pollinators as well as being deer resistant.
