Growing Non-GMO Santa Cruz Sunset Begonia Seeds
Start begonia seeds inside in mid to late January for best results. Santa Cruz Sunset begonias are one of the easiest varieties to grow and can be sown just as easily outdoors as they are outdoors. For earliest blooms, begin seeds indoors 6-8 weeks prior to the final frost and then transplant to a partially shaded place either indoors or out. Boliviensis begonia seeds may take 21-28 days to germinate with full lighting. Lightly press without covering 4-5 Santa Cruz Sunset begonia seeds 18 inches apart in moderately fertile, moist, and well-drained soil in partial shade to full shade. Start the seeds in a clean and sanitized tray or pot. Never reuse potting mix for begonias! Broadcast the seeds evenly on top of the growing medium, and leave them uncovered. Water in with a mister, and be careful not to blast the seeds away!
For best results: place the seeds under a grow light for 14-18 hours per day. Provide bottom heat at about 75°F. Don’t let the soil dry out; a humidity dome can be useful. Once the seedlings have at least two true leaves, gently lift them apart and let them grow in separate pots. Gradually harden them off after the danger of frost has passed. Plant outdoors (or wherever you want them) and enjoy! After establishment, they are easygoing and lovable. Plants are somewhat tolerant to drought because of their waxy leaves. Fertilize regularly.
Santa Cruz Sunset Begonias in the Flower Garden
Red begonias are perfect for indoor or shade gardens. They are one of the few flowering annuals which thrive in the shade. Pair them with other shade-loving impatiens and heuchera for color and interest.
Landscape use of Santa Cruz Sunset Begonias
This variety of begonia is commonly used as a shade bedding plant or a houseplant. Potted arrangements of begonias often feature ferns for height and bacopa for color. Other plants that work well with the Santa Cruz Sunset begonia are succulents, shade bloomers, other begonias, dracaenas, and many different ferns.
About Santa Cruz Sunset Begonia Garden Seeds
Begonia x boliviensis is one of about 1,800 species of begonia native to the humid and shady tropics of South America. The genus begonia is the absolute largest and most diverse genus in all the world. At the time of classification, French botanists chose the name begonia in respect to the 17th-century French governor of Haiti, Michel Begon.
Although Begonias are really outdoor perennials in zones 8-11, they are enjoyed everywhere! They overwinter very well indoors. If you live in zone 8 or below, keep them in pots, and overwinter them indoors!
Begonias are toxic to animals such as dogs, cats, and horses.
Despite their love for the shade, begonias can also be grown in sunnier areas. They will need to be watered more often and protected from high-intensity rays.
