This "romano" type has large, flattened bean pods. They have a juicy-sweet, meaty texture and a rich flavor. These beans are extremely productive, especially if picked before the bean pods mature on the vine. Support with a sturdy trellis or fence, as these are vigorous, large plants that produce a bumper crop of 7-9 inch pods. White-seeded. Growing Musica Beans in the Vegetable Garden
Direct-sow Musica bean seeds 1 inch deep once soil temperatures are reliably above 60 F, spacing seeds 3 to 6 inches apart at the base of a sturdy trellis, fence, or pole structure. Install supports before planting to avoid disturbing young seedlings later. Space rows 24 to 36 inches apart to give vines room to climb and spread.
These vigorous plants will quickly begin climbing once established, so make sure the trellis is tall and sturdy enough to support a full season of growth. Water regularly and consistently, and harvest often to keep plants productive; letting pods mature fully on the vine will slow new pod production.
Harvesting Musica Beans
Musica beans are ready to pick once pods reach about 7 to 9 inches long, but are still flat, tender, and snap easily. Harvest frequently, ideally every day or two once plants begin producing, since picking regularly encourages the vine to keep flowering and setting new pods. Use two hands when picking to avoid damaging the vine: hold the stem in one hand and pull the pod with the other.
