Growing Non-GMO Snow Crystals Alyssum Flower Seeds
Plant seeds outdoors straight into the garden bed in mild climates. Do not plant outside until after the danger of frost has passed. For sooner blooms in cooler zones, germinate the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost under a grow light and in warm soil, at least 60°F. Before transplanting, harden off the seedlings by gradually extending the time they spend outdoors. To increase the drainage of your soil, work compost, sand, and/or ground-up mulch into the soil to increase the porosity.
Water the plants regularly, but ensure that the leaves and the top inch or two of soil can fully dry between irrigations. Although it is not necessary, pruning off any branches whose leaves have finished blooming can encourage a clean and compact growth habit. In particularly hot and arid climates, provide partial shade and a layer of mulch.
Snow Crystals Alyssum in the Flower Garden
These Alyssums will gladly attract beneficial insects of all kinds to pollinate your yard or garden. Alyssum plants work well with a wide variety of other flowering bedding plants.
Landscape Use of Snow Crystals Alyssum
Sweet Snow Crystals Alyssum is perfect for pots and containers. It easily bulks out the lower area and spills over the edge to allow a taller flower, such as a Corn Flower or Gerber daisy, room to wildly bloom above it. It is even used in some pest management routines for its ability to draw insects to the garden that eat or somehow disable common garden nuisances such as aphids and spider mites.
About Snow Crystals Alyssum Garden Seeds
Alyssum is also the perfect plant to fill in areas and prevent weeds while spring bloomers like tulips are dormant. Similarly, it works well underneath larger plants like roses and clematis.
Expect tiny white blooms to continuously refill and cover the plant all summer until the frost sets in. In zones 9 and higher, it can also be grown as a perennial.
Alyssum is in the same family as mustard and broccoli. The family Brassicaceae is known for its wide variety of species. Try not to plant brassicas of any sort in the same patch of soil two years in a row.
Alyssum is considered invasive in some locations of the world. Check with your local extension about laws and policies if you have questions specific to your area. When in doubt, keep it contained to a pot and deadhead regularly to avoid reseeding. Then, pull the entire plant out and destroy it at the end of each season.
Lobularia maritima, more commonly known as Alyssum or Sweet Alyssum, is a low-growing species native to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. Sweet Alyssum is one of the most fragrant blooms available and one of the most award-winning. The genus name Lobularia is derived from the Latin word lobules which means "small pod." The species name maritima means "coastal."
Alyssum plants are edible and non–toxic to both humans and animals.
