Growing Non-GMO White Alyssum Flower Seeds
Plant seeds outdoors straight into the garden bed in mild climates. Do not plant outside until after the danger of frost has passed. For sooner blooms and in cooler zones, germinate the seeds indoors under a grow light and in soil at least 60°F. Before transplanting, harden off the seedlings by gradually extending their duration outdoors. Ensure the soil has good drainage by filling a small hole with water and waiting for the water to drain out. If the water remains in the hole, work compost, sand, or ground-up leaves into the soil to increase the porosity.
Water the plants regularly, but ensure that the leaves and the top inch or two of soil can fully dry between waterings. Although it is not required, trimming off the branches whose leaves have finished blooming can encourage a clean and compact growth habit. Remove weeds promptly. In especially hot and dry climates, provide partial shade.
White Alyssum in the Flower Garden
These Alyssums will gladly attract beneficial insects of all kinds to pollinate your garden. Alyssum plants work well with bedding plants, such as pansies, coneflowers, mums, snapdragons, and zinnias. They will all work together to bring in beneficial insects and add interest.
Landscape Use of White Alyssum
Sweet White Alyssum is perfect for borders, pots, annual ground covers, and beneficial insect gardens. It is even used as a ‘banker plant’ in some pest management programs because it attracts insects that eat or otherwise disable common garden pests such as aphids and spider mites.
About White Alyssum Garden Seeds
Alyssum is perfect for pots and containers. It easily bulks out the lower area and spills over the edge to allow a taller flower, such as a dwarf zinnia or Gerber daisy, room to explode above it, creating a spectacular contrast of color and texture.
Alyssum is also the perfect plant to fill in areas and prevent weeds while spring bloomers like daffodils are dormant. Similarly, it works well underneath larger plants like roses and clematis.
Expect tiny white blooms to constantly replenish and fill in all summer long until the frost sets in. In zones above 9, it can also be grown as a perennial.
Alyssum is in the same family as mustard and broccoli. The family Brassicaceae is known for its wide variety of species! Try not to plant a brassica of any kind in the same patch of soil two years in a row.
Alyssum is considered invasive in some areas. Check with your local extension about laws and policies if you have questions specific to your area.
Alyssum can symbolize worth beyond beauty, as well as protection from heated encounters. However, it can also be known as madwort because it used to be the sigil adopted by a minor cult that worshiped Sheru, the god of night and nightmares.
Alyssum plants are edible and non–toxic to both humans and animals.
Stories From Our Gardeners
"I always recommend every garden have at least a few alyssum plants (if you’re willing to keep them in check)! They are beautiful and provide necessary habitats for the good kinds of bugs. Plant them with marigolds throughout your vegetable garden for increased pest resistance overall!"
