Growing Non-GMO Subzero Kale Cover Crop Seeds
Kale cover crop is most commonly broadcast sown. It is best sown in the fall or winter depending on the climate. The temperatures in the evening should be consistently below 65 degrees F at the time of planting. It can also withstand a few moderate touches of frost without too much setback. Seeds germinate in 7-14 days and are ready to be foraged on by animals between 8-13 weeks later. For optimal results provide even and consistent water if local rainfall is not sufficient.
Allow time to dry between watings to reduce the likelihood of waterborne diseases. Practice crop rotation with brassicas; do not plant any type of brassica in the same location more than every five or six years to promote optimal soil health and reduce the need for fertilizers. After an initial grazing, if given a few weeks to recover and the weather permits, there is usually an opportunity for a second grazing on the same crop.
