History
A groat is simply the hulled kernel of a number of different cereal grains. Groats include the cereal germ, endosperm, and bran of the grain. Oat groats, and the groats of other cereals, are found in Kasha, a popular dish found in Eastern Europe and Asia.
Oat groats can also be found in black pudding sausages and groaty pudding. Groaty pudding is a classic in England, and includes soaked oat groats, leeks, beef, and beef stock, and is baked for over 12 hours before serving.
Health Benefits
Because oat groats still contain the bran (outer skin) they are high in fiber, B vitamins, and antioxidants. Thanks to the presence of the germ, protein, polyunsaturated fats, and a number of minerals are also found in oat groats. Fiber's ability to lower cholesterol is the reason why whole grains, like oat groats, are labeled "Ëœheart healthy".
