Heirloom Spring Mix Lettuce Growth Habits:
Lettuce seeds can be directly sown into the garden as soon as you can work your soil in the spring and again in late summer for a fall harvest. Lettuce can also be started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before you plan to transplant them outdoors for a very early crop.
The looseleaf lettuce varieties in the Spring Mix, including Sunset, Tango (green and red), Lolla Rossa Darky, and Royal Oakleaf are easy to grow, and can be harvested as baby lettuce as well as fully mature lettuce.
The romaine lettuces, including Little Gem Cos and Super Red Romaine, produce upright, semi-open rosettes.
The Ithaca lettuce variety included in the Spring Mix is a crisphead type that grows a firm head with frilly leaves.
Various Uses for Spring Mix Lettuce:
Spring Mix lettuce seeds can be planted every 2 weeks during the spring and fall seasons to produce nearly continuous crops for fresh salads and adding to sandwiches or burgers. This mix can also be used in a variety of ways, including as microgreens (ready in 8 to 12 days), baby leaf lettuce (ready in 3 to 5 weeks) and fully mature lettuce (ready in 50 days).
Spring Mix Lettuce Benefits:
This Spring Mix lettuce is ideal for quick harvests in the spring and fall. The different lettuce types can have significantly different nutritional value. However, the lettuce types included in the Spring Mix are, in general, excellent sources of vitamins C and A as well as folate.
Additional Information:
The shallow roots of lettuce plants make it especially important to keep the soil evenly moist.
